Welcome to Spring 2026 in Central Texas! If you’ve lived around Austin for more than five minutes, you know exactly what this feels like. One day we’re wearing hoodies and grabbing a warm coffee at a local shop, and the next day the sun is beating down so hard you’re tempted to jump into Barton Springs just to survive the walk to your car.
As we pull our air conditioning systems out of their short winter slumber, many of our neighbors are asking the same question: “Hey Accu-Temp, I keep hearing about this R-410A phase-out. Is my AC unit officially a dinosaur? If it breaks, am I stuck in the heat?”
It’s a fair question. The rules changed quite a bit over the last couple of years, and if you aren’t an HVAC nerd like we are, the headlines can be a bit confusing. At Accu-Temp Air Conditioning & Heating, we believe in being straight shooters. We aren’t here to scare you into buying a new system with “end-of-the-world” sales tactics. We’re here to give you the facts so you can make the best choice for your home and your budget.
So, grab a glass of sweet tea, and let’s break down exactly what the R-410A phase-out means for you in 2026.
The short answer is: Yes, absolutely.
If your AC was installed between 2010 and 2024, it almost certainly runs on R-410A (often called Puron). Even though the government has stopped the manufacturing of new units that use this refrigerant, your existing system didn’t suddenly become illegal on January 1st.
You can still call us for a repair, we can still swap out a capacitor, we can still fix a leak, and we can still add refrigerant if you’re low. Your AC isn’t a ticking time bomb, it’s just a piece of technology that is part of a previous generation. Think of it like a perfectly good gas-powered car in a world where more people are buying electric. It still gets you to H-E-B just fine, but the way we “fuel” it is changing.
For those who missed the memo over the last two years, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) mandated a phase-down of HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons), and R-410A is the big one on that list. The goal is to move the HVAC industry toward refrigerants with a lower “Global Warming Potential” (GWP).
As of January 1, 2025, manufacturers stopped making new R-410A residential units. By the end of 2025, the “sell-through” period ended, meaning we can no longer install a brand-new R-410A system. Everything coming off the trucks now uses the new, next-generation refrigerants like R-454B or R-32.
But again, and we can’t stress this enough, this doesn’t mean your current unit has to go to the scrapyard. It just means the “juice” it needs to run is becoming a rarer commodity.
Here is where things get interesting. In 2026, the supply of newly manufactured R-410A has been severely restricted. To keep the millions of existing units across Texas running, the industry has shifted heavily toward reclaimed and recycled refrigerant.
Now, don’t let the word “recycled” scare you. This isn’t like buying a used mattress. Reclaimed R-410A undergoes a strict chemical cleaning process to remove any impurities, moisture, or oils. By the time it goes into our tanks, it meets the exact same purity standards (AHRI-700) as “virgin” refrigerant. It works exactly the same.
The catch? Because we have to “harvest” it from older systems and process it, the supply is tighter than it used to be. And as any Texan who has tried to buy BBQ at 2:00 PM on a Saturday knows: when supply is low and demand is high, the price goes up.

This is where our “Honesty First” policy comes into play. While we can repair your R-410A unit, you should be prepared for the fact that the refrigerant itself is getting more expensive every year.
Back in 2020, adding a couple of pounds of R-410A was a relatively minor expense. In 2026, that same “top-off” is going to represent a much larger chunk of your repair bill. If your system has a significant leak, we’re going to have a very honest conversation with you.
We’ve seen some companies out there using these price hikes as a high-pressure sales tactic: “Your refrigerant is expensive, so you HAVE to buy a new $15,000 system today or you’ll die of heatstroke!”
That is not the Accu-Temp way.
We’ll show you the numbers. We’ll tell you exactly what the refrigerant costs, what the labor costs, and what the long-term outlook for your specific unit looks like. If your unit is only six years old and just needs a minor fix, repairing it is probably a great move. If your unit is 14 years old and needs $1,200 worth of R-410A just to get through the summer… well, we’ll give you the facts and let you decide.
Deciding whether to sink money into an older R-410A system or upgrade to a new energy-efficient unit is a personal choice. To help you out, we usually suggest looking at three things:
We know that HVAC repairs are never fun. They always seem to happen on the hottest day of the year, usually right before you have guests coming over for a barbecue.
We have built this company on a simple foundation: Treat people like neighbors.
Whether you choose to keep your R-410A system humming along for another three years or you decide it’s time to upgrade to a brand-new A2L-compliant system, we’re going to support that decision 100%.
If you do decide to replace your system in 2026, you’ll be moving to one of the new refrigerants like R-454B. These are “mildly flammable” (don’t worry, that sounds scarier than it is: your hairspray is more dangerous) and much better for the environment.
These new systems are incredibly sophisticated. They come with sensors and safety protocols that older units never had. If you’re curious about how they work or want to learn about the latest 2-stage condensers, we’d love to chat with you about them.
The bottom line for 2026 is this: Don’t panic.
If your AC is blowing cold right now, keep doing what you’re doing. Make sure you’re changing your filters and keeping up with regular maintenance. Proper maintenance is the #1 way to prevent a refrigerant leak in the first place, saving you from having to deal with the high cost of R-410A altogether.
